Reproduction WWII Enigma Machine Axle Compensator

$13.00

For sale is a 1:1 scale steel reproduction WWII Enigma machine axle compensator.  The axle compensator sits between the two arms of the advance bar, also known as the compensator [see pictures].  The axle compensator passes through the driver thin and several driver thicks, depending on whether the machine is a three, four or five rotor system.  In the original Enigma machine the axle compensator was held in place by 1mm holes in both arms of the advance bar and corresponding 1mm holes in the axle compensator:  the compensator is lacking these holes.  The buyer will have to decide how to keep the axle compensator from migrating horizontally.  When the Enigma operator depressed a key, the bottom of the key pushed the advance bar downward, and a pivot motion raised the two arms of the advance bar upward.  This upward movement of the advance bar caused the driver thin to be raised upward, and a slot in the driver thin engaged the toothed wheel of the first rotor, advancing the rotor one letter.  The mechanical encryption sequence has begun.  After the operator keyed in 26 letters, then the first driver thick in line was engaged, its’ tip fitting into a slot cut into the second rotor in line.  Thus the function of the driver thin and driver thick is to mechanically rotate the rotors as the Enigma keys are depressed.  Each driver thin and driver thick has a tiny hole for a corresponding spring to keep it in place, and sleeves with a tiny hole would keep the drivers spaced properly.  The sleeves were kept in place by tiny rods placed in both the sleeves and in the axle compensator itself:  these holes in the compensator are missing.  I intend to revamp the sleeves by designing a shaft collar with appropriate holes to keep the drivers, springs and sleeves in place.  The axle compensator weighs 1.1 ounces, and will be shipped via USPS First Class or USPS First Class International for non-US countries.
